Island Child

Emily, Lantana, Holly, Forrest
Hanamanu, Maui. Camping in 1989.
Things about this picture.
I really really really liked having a lot of kids in my family. I was proud of it. It was fun and never boring. We were evenly spaced, by two years. I thought four was a lot, but I married a man who came from nine, so maybe it's not so extreme

I have my hair in a braid, as I did most of my childhood. After a bad incident, my mom was very afraid of another uku, or headlice, epidemic. I'm wearing muddy high tops. I grew up as country mouse in a wet, muddy tropical town. I always thought you could tell a tourist by their clean shoes. How could shoes people WEAR be clean?  (Now, my dad says Oahu people never have dirt on their shoes and to check your feet over there in the city.) At the time, I was always secretly envious of girls dressed in frilly lacy socks with patent leather shoes. I admired those hideous 80s styles, trendy at the time, on TV, and on tourists from the mainland. In retrospect, I should be grateful my parents were hippies stuck on 70s fashions.

My sister Lantana, a.k.a. Lany, is copying my foot movement. She copied everything I did. She tried to write in cursive when she was supposed to be learning to print, I taught her the times tables when she was 5, and she read all my high school novels when she was in 6th grade. She pretty much stalked me.  I only minded when my friends came over and I wanted to feel cool. But then we grew up a little more and it was more mutual stalking. The fact that she copied WHATEVER I did was a lot of responsibility. I avoided drugs or anything bad cause I wanted her to have a happy life. No carefree youth for me...See note below:

Oldest Children, (from random birth order website)
Oldest children often bear the brunt of responsibility for their younger siblings. They are placed in a care providing and protective role for the younger siblings and therefore may tend to be more responsible in their lives in general. This can result in a desire to control the people and situations around them. Oldest children are usually the “good” children of the family who follow the rules and set the examples for younger children. Positive traits that are typically associated with oldest children include their leadership abilities and ambition.

I am the typical oldest child.  I didn't really like having to fake being brave when I also thought there were monsters or at least Night Marchers in the bushes. In Hawaii, we had Hawaiian studies from K-6, where an elder, or kupuna, would visit our class and teach us Hawaiian language, games, and legends. They would tell us about the night marchers, ghosts of ancient Hawaiian warriors, as would many adults in my life. I grew up on three acres surrounded by pasture. It was DARK, the sky sparkled with stars. It was beautiful, but very rural. So, I half-heard the night marcher drums each night as I fell asleep.

I like Holly, the baby. I was so happy she was a girl because I LOVED the name Holly. She was born with a happy-go-lucky personality, on July 12. She told every stranger she met her name, and that her birthday was July 12. Holly ended up getting random piles of birthday cards. She liked to make us laugh. She never said hibiscus but hibis-followed-by-kiss-sound. And she was our living doll, letting us carry her around and dress her up. I also appreciate that my parents were cool and hip enough to take four little kids/babies camping. Andrew and I can barely get it together to take two people camping--are our future kids doomed?

And my brother Forrest. He's two years younger than me and was my main pal for years. He was very sensitive but also charming. Note: he is the only one looking at the camera. He liked to please and engage adults and bigger kids, always. He was more drawn to the bad boy types and always established himself as a dude. Probably to compensate for having three sisters, he was obsessed with dirt bikes and all boy stuff. But he was also good for late night heart-to-hearts. Also, check out that bomber jacket.

One funny thing about this picture is you can tell our birth order.  At some point my brother and I were the same size, then he grew bigger than me, and I stopped physically fighting with him. He hated that I got to (or as I viewed it, had to) learn to drive before him. And then Lany, third-born, and now nearly 6 feet tall, started her growth spurt and they were the same size. Like him, she was competitive, and hates to be discounted, especially on the count of being a girl. She would wrestle with him and do scary bike jumps in the yard and prove herself daily. Meanwhile, I reminded everyone to be safe.

I wrote this in past tense but many of these things are still true about my siblings. I feel like we are all going to return to the state of being together all the time (which is what we do whenever we are on the same island) and whatever else we're doing now is just a phase.
Bonus pic: Childhood friends, then my brother (with red cords), and me.

Happy March

My cousin is getting married.  In Yosemite. Our Aunt did a portrait of her and her intended for the invitations. Aren't they beautiful?  My cousin is also my BFF and a fellow loner Californian with me. The rest of our very close-knit family lives in Hawaii or Maryland. I get really sad when she leaves the state, even though she's five hours North. My San Francisco neighbor. Hi Jan! Love you! Can't wait to celebrate you and yours and ours.
I used to have a community garden. It was an obsession since I was underemployed and really like plants and eating vegetables. I gave up my garden lots. I saw it recently...they hacked the rose bushes into stumps in the ground--it is horrifying.

Recently, I decided to grow some with my kinders. Sprouts have sprouted! Also, I read The Lorax to the kids today and teared up and we talked about how they are the future of the world and How YOU DONT NEED A THNEED even though TV will tell you you do. You do NEED clean air and water and trees....and then I talked a little smack about LA and the 8 lanes of traffic each way and smog and we wondered if they used to have barbaloot bears or swamiswans before it was all cement.
March came! It was windy. We marked the Start of Spring, Day Lights Saving, Spring Break, St. Patty's day, and Dr. Seuss' birthday on the Calendar.

My blogs aren't very polished or organized. Sorry. I'm aiming for quantity > quality. Hope it isn't showing too much.  Thank you for reading, readers.

Meet You at the Park

My dad and husband run as I lounge in the grass of my old middle school.
I grew up in the country side of Maui. We had a dirt road. There is no shoulder on the winding, lush roads of my neighborhood. We were taught to make a dive for the bushes as soon as we heard a car coming around the bend. As kids we still braved it and explored the neighborhood by street regularly. But more often we traveled through the field, cow pasture, or gulch.
My parents are happily divorced. They still have a lot in common. The love of dogs is a big one. My mom has her chihuahua, Koa, and my dad has his beagle, Jubilation. Oliver, the shorter haired chihuahua (front) is my sister's.

A new thing my parents have in common is that they both enjoy walking at the park. I spent a big part of my last trip home to Maui walking at different parks. Parks are wonderful spaces in general--they make me feel better about paying taxes. They ought to be enjoyed. I think this current love of parks is due to my parents being over the whole jumping-into-the-bushes thing.

When we are home, mom and dad are forced to interact. It generally goes okay. My dad offers my mom coconuts that he opens with a machete he keeps in the back of his truck. And they are nice to one another's dogs. (phew!)
Koa has the best smile. I like to call him Coco--or Cocoa Puff (but my mom doesn't care for it). When you scoop up this dog up he goes limp and melts into your arms. He lets you cradle him like a baby. Talk about a comfort pet!

Sidenote: Even though I am on the mainland I have two student in my class named Koa. I feel like it is rude to say, "Oh, wow, that's my mom's chihuahua's name!" even though it was my immediate reaction. Koa is a beautiful, native tree of Hawaii, highly valued for its strong wood. It was used for canoes and surfboards in the olden days and is now built into furniture and guitars.
A beagle's joyful gallop... my mom and dads' dogs get along well.
The master of fetch! The ball is behind him. No, really he is...I don't know what was going on.
Jube, my dad's dog, jumped in my mom's CRV and was not eager to get out. A little bit awkward.
Christmas pooch--all tuckered out. While the chihuahuas relish my love, he only tolerates my adoration. I realize this blog is light on Oliver pictures. No worries...he has his own blog which is about his previous gig as a Honolulu hound.

Baltimore (Bodymore)

I have a weird thing for Baltimore... see a post from last summer I almost forgot about. My dad grew up in DC so I'm much more familiar with that pretty, polished city. I have a younger cousins who live in Baltimore and relished the chance to visit them in their stomping ground.

Courtney, in her townhouse. It is soooo cute. (And so is she). And she has a porch roof!

They had a "Hon" themed Christmas tree.
Well, Courtney, actually lives in a charming regentrified (safe-ish?) part of Baltimore called Canton:

Where they also believe in buying local.  My cousins (twins) take a water taxi across the harbor to work. Isn't that awesome?
I love old buildings. We don't have many in Hawaii (or California, really).  And I know these are babies compared to the oldies of Europe. But it still charms me.

The nitty-gritty Baltimore Rat....
And my cheerful Aunt posing as Charlie B.

We got really into The Wire...watching all five seasons over the last few years. What an excellent TV show....ahhh, I miss it. It was set among the crime and corrupt politicians of Baltimore (which you read in the graffiti in one scene in the opening as Bodymore, Murderland).

I have provided you the opening scene and trailer of Season 1, Episode 1 so you can say you've started watching the series. It has amazing diaologue, actors, and provides a lot of social commentary. It is a teensy bit hard to follow at first (it requires your attention) but is so worth watching. Omar Little is my favorite criminal/character...apparently he is Obama's favorite too. Here he is on my pinterest board-- Great Characters.

San Francisco Trails

Seeing Oahu cousins visit their parents' old stomping ground.
Stinson Beach photoshoot. My cousin Jan (and her fellah Joe) were incredible in-city hosts.
The colorful Castro....where we ate several meals. I felt at home (even though I'm far from Ken-doll esque)...I am from Rainbow Land (Hawaii) and the rainbows reminded me of my kindergarten classroom.
The skyline from Dolores Park. I'll be back soon SF...I love you!

Good Morning Baltimore!

From the highway...
Orioles and Ravens too.
Inner Harbor. Tourists. Shopping. Water.
Under Armour.... hip and young and happy. Like my cousins who work there.  My new favorite show these days happens to be "Friday Night Lights."  (And I don't like football).  It's full of product plugs for Under Armour.

Maryland Climbing

I am in the great state of Maryland, just outside of DC. I am enjoying the balmy Spring/Summer weather and the company of my family. We had a delightful hike along the Potomac yesterday.
I love the green, lushness of summer. Very different than dry California.
In this way, the East Coast reminds me more Hawaii.
My dad, the arborist and climber.... playing in his parent's backyard while I serve as ground crew.

I am learning a few new trees to ID...
crepe myrtle,
dogwood,
pin oak,
and weeping cherry.
I really like plants.

Ten Good Things

1. I restarted the Couch to 5k program. I am starting to recall what endorphins feel like. I tricked myself into running today: I was feeling grumpy and tired and committed to only a five minute walk, which turned into a run. It was barefoot at the beach--my best running method.

2. I am going to participate in a month-long writing project in July....it looks to be a rewarding experience. I have to start writing every day in preparation for the course. I am excited to write again and become a better teacher of writers in the process. You may be hearing from me more often--I assume blogging counts?

3. EIGHT more days in the classroom.  I  love my students and tell them so, it is a joy to watch them grow so dramatically: I now have a room full of readers and writers.  But I am feeling like a mother bird,  ready to push them out of the nest and on to 1st grade. I thrive when I am busy but I am in desperate need of some downtime. If I haven't called you please don't take it personally.

4. Andrew is becoming an accomplished artist. He brings me home beautiful things from the pottery studio most days. I support this despite his clay caked clothes.  I love his style!

5. My aunt and uncle are selling their house in MD and moving to Hawaii, my homeland. It's a tad bittersweet as love their mainland place, such a comfortable rambling home....please someone buy it--it's full of wonderful memories and good vibes.  I am really looking forward visiting their new home on the Big Island..before long I'll be hanging out on their big porch and eat papayas from their yard. Ahh Hawaii.

6. My grandpa turned 89 yesterday. My grandparents also celebrate their wedding anniversary!

7. I will likely see them in June. I adore these people.

8.  I have a new Beta fish (a blue one). He fits in well. Beta Boy is the rejected pet of our dear friends...he was eating their other fish.

9. These same friends are having a baby. And a girl at that!  Super stoked for you Courtney & Stephen.

10.  A co-worker who is a former yoga friend told me this morning she will kick my butt if I don't come back to yoga soon. She is so fit and happy and happening...mid 50ies and amazing.  I am grateful for the good role models in my life. I plan to rededicate myself to the practice pronto.

Introducing Norine

Norine is now three months old.  I have had so much fun playing with my cousin's squishalicious baby girl.  She was born 16 days after her due date, so she's had a bit of a head start in the growth department.  She has an extremely mellow, easygoing, and happy personality.  Introducing Baby Buddha.

Big brother Jove has a lot to teach her.
